Parking Brake, Cables

I will try to start this one off with some photos of the Parking Brake Pedal end of the cable which is very difficult to get at.

I for one would love that! Still have not replaced the park brake release cable on my XM!

After a fruitless attempt to relocate the parking brake lock/release cable at the pedal end myself with the complete mechanism in place , I sought the help of Noz.

After removing the knee level facia panel. You have adequate access to the pedal mechanism. There are two 10mm and one 16mm headed bolts which hold the mechanism in place. The 16mm headed bolt has a captive washer at its head which on my car had been cut, removing a section large enough to clear the heater matrix pipes. There is also a clevis pin to disconnect from the pedal linkage.

It is then possible to withdraw the bolt completely. None of the bolts hold any springs under tension so it is safe to withdraw them. If the lock / release cable has broken the nipple off its end you should be able to withdraw the complete mechanism.

The cable end nipple is held in the centre of a hollow 'barrel' with a spring clip. We had to bend this slightly to maintain its tension to keep the end nipple in place.

The release mechanism on the dash is held on with four screws, when removed from the dash and turned upside down, removing the underside screws gives easy access to the other end of the cable.

My primary parking brake cable had been cut inside the cabin. The cable passes through a guide/stop in the footwell. We had difficulty in releasing the cable from the guide/stop inside the engine bay. We had to remove it to remove the seized cable end. It is held in place with two 10mm headed nuts. Access is very tight but we managed. It was much easier to replace it once the cable had been removed, it hinders access with a socket to the lower nut.

Just a PS to my last contribution.

The spring clip which retains the cable on my release mechanism at the pedal end had lost its ability to keep the nipple in position. I removed it again and held it in position with a couple of nylon zip ties. There's no chance of its escape now!

The XM has me stumped !

I obtained a new release cable and attempted to install today. But no joy, I could not get to the pedal mechanism. I could get the 16 mm and one 10 mm bolt out but that was not enough. There was no way I could get to the 3rd 10mm bolt as it is located behind the pedal!

Hopefully I am missing something obvious here.

Can someone let me know how I get the pedal out?

Where did you get your release cable from??? I ordered from from AEP and got a caliper to equauliser cable.. Local stealer told me Citroen dont supply them any more. I email AEP but not had a reply yet...

I need to do two cables on my 24v, one the release cable and the other the bonnet cable..

On a recent trip to Edinbrough, I managed to Raid TWO XM's for their parking brake RELEASE cables, so have now had pleanty of practice removing the cables..

I now have 3 in stock, just need to re-fit now to my V6 24v! That should be fun..

Not tried re-fitting to my 24v yet, but it looks a bugger to do. The easyest thing to do though it may take longer would prehaps to remove the steering colum, and brake/accelerator pedals, and possibly clutch pedal, this may make a bit more room.

I beleve Peter N has replaced the cable from the lever to the pedal ratchet, he may have a better idea. I'm yet to do mine, but not looking forward to it.

There's no need to remove the other pedals or the column. Remove dash shroud and if you follow the pedal linkage to its pivot point you'll find the last bolt. You cant really see it, but it is there. You really need to get the mechanism out to locate the cable end and retaining clip. I zip tied mine in as an extra precaution as the clip wasn't as springy as it once was.

As I said, It looks like they need removing to gain access but I've not done mine or attempted to either, will find this out when I get round to dooing it..

I had another look at this and the exploded diagram. I think I can see the bolt on the exploded diagram but while I can feel the 3rd bold I can't see any way to access it.

Just had another go at this. I just can't see how to get to the 3rd bolt (10mm) holding the pedal in.

I can't even fit a 10mm socket over the bolt, let alone a spanner!

Can anyone who has done this share the secret?
