Hi evwybody,
Happy New Year unless your XM is not going and is sitting down on it's fat arse laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Any ideas for jacking it up (apart from buying one of those airbags - Any good?)? To do the Starter Motor!

Ta.

If you take the belt off the HP pump, and turn it with a pulley attached to a drill perhaps, you might get enough pressure to get a jack under it.

I believe that some people have made little rigs to do this, consisting of a spare HP pump mounted to a wooden board, with a washing machine motor turning it. The pipes from the dead car are then attached to this, and it can be pumped up.

Might be a bit drastic, but if you're totally stuck....

You can carefully jack up an XM using the front crossmember under the radiator. It is a rippled steel plate. You need a lowish trolley jack and an assistant to place some blocks under the jacking points on the side when the car is high enough to then allow you to get a jack further in under the subframe. Has worked for me a couple of times.

Unless you have something that can apply slow and good torque to the HP pump you will be wasting your time. I have a home made gizmo which runs a washing machine motor and gearbox and then onto a DS pump and regulator for sphere testing. By using a long V belt from this and getting the angle/tension right it would work. We have used it a couple of times to lift dead DSs.

Good luck on the starter replacement.

It may be worth your while as you will be in the area to have a new power lead for the starter made. I had a local auto sparky make one for me when I did the heads on the XM. The improvement in starting using a nice fat power feed makes a difference. Often people replace batteries on Xantias and sometimes XMs as they think the battery is getting lazy. In reality it is the accountant specified copper cable that has aged and built up resistance not letting enough zot through to the starter.

Hi

I suscessfully pumped a Xantia SX WITH anti sink up with an ordinary electric drill, which I had made a threded bar to fit directly into the centre of the pump pully, as its threaded... it pumped it up a treat!! AND it stayed up for a month before I did any work on it!

Problem of course, is removing the pump from it mounting in the first place without damaging the ridgid pipe going to it..

but yes it should work well.. I cannot recall if XM pumps have a threaded centre like Xantias...

I used one of them.....

Slide it under the car flat, and inflate it from the exhaust. Couldnt of asked for a quicker easier way to do it.

Halfords sell these for i think it was £39.99 i paid for mine!

David.

Hi

I've heard of people making a very shallow ramp using planks to roll their XM up, hence to get enough space to get a jack undernearth.

Cheers

Hi Paul,

You said the car wouldn't start but you didn't say if it will turn over or not. If the starter turns at all why not just simply take the plugs out and turn the engine with the starter? Use a set of jump leads from another battery or even better another car. It shouldn't take a lot of amps to do this since there will be no compression. If the starter still turns this has got to be your easiest and least complicated option.

Cheers

Hi everybody, unsure.gif unsure.gif unsure.gif

Thanks a lot for all the tips.

I happen to have an old sinclair bike motor on which the pulley has gone I think these were made from washing machine motors maybe I could adapt it for a hp pump wizzer. Sorry Noz starter motor is stuck and will not move. Also the ground on which it is parked is sloped and even with 2 people it is diffficult to push. The XM V6 is a heavy beast! I think I will have to get an airbag. Does anyone have an opinion on the difference between the draper or the challenge apart that is from the weight they are rated to lift?

Incidentally I asked a seller on Ebay (seller id 4pot - Jon from Louth, Lincs) who is selling a XMV6 starter motor if he thought it could be removed without going through the front and taking all the radiators and inlet manifold off I reprint below what he said which is very helpful I am very obliged to him for this since it just might save the bacon for this XM and I might withdraw them from sale on Ebay.

Hi,
Having changed the starter motor a couple of times I've plenty of practice! It's not easy, but can be done from underneath, once the car has been well jacked up and supported. The following is what I can remember from my car, which might not be exactly the same as yours. I would start working from below - it won't come out upwards.

1. There is a flat metal plate which needs taking off first - it has 3 or 4 bolts in and once that's off you can see a bit more.
2. I think the next bit is the exhaust heat shield.
3. There are 3 5 or 6mm allen bolts holding the starter on - you should be able to see two from below and 1 from above. One of them comes out easily, another one is hidden behind hydraulic pipes - I used a allen key bit and an open ended spanner to undo it. The top bolt is ver tricky - take off the distributor cap first, and look underneath the distributor body and you should be able to see it. You will need a combination of allen bits, short extension and ratchets etc to get to it - it's not easy but can be done!
4. Don't forget to disconnect the battery and loosen the electrical connections to the starter before you remove the bolts.
5. Once the bolts are out, the heat shield needs pushing out of the way, the starter can then be jiggled about until it comes free.
II would allow 3 or 4 hours if you've not done it before, but it's not impossible.
Good Luck!
