This is a fault that has been with the car scince I picked it up. When I first saw it the radio worked perfectly, however now all I get is static. It has the original Clarion radio/tape unit with a CD changer under the passenger seat (this also does not work!, suspect filthy laser). I noticed its a 'diversity' unit, but there is only one arial on the car, so I assume there is a box somwhere to enable the heated rear window to act as an arail. Any ideas on why the radio would fail in such a way would be hlepful!

I dont know your particular set up, but if you are getting just noise its unlikely to be the radio at fault, more likely a problem with your aerial. Try pulling the radio out, removing the aerial connector and and pushing a piece of ordinary flex, with about 1/2" stripped back and folded over on itself. If that works check the connection under the aerial, above the interior light.

It has two aerils, well two leads from the radio and two araial leads to plug them onto, one red one black. Both are pluged in, still just static. where is the second aerail?

Hi Stewart,

OK, its obvious, I don't know what a 'diversity' radio is. Never heard of it before. Neither have I heard of a radio with two aerials. Wouldn't that cause 'shadowing' ie one aerial receiving the signal slightly later than the other causing interference?

Can you enlighten us? Maybe even a photo?

Cheers

A diversity radio would have two tuners with two seperate aerial inputs so that if the signal drops out on one it may be recieved on the other one, they use them on radio microphones, but I have never come across one in an XM.

'diversity' recivers were common at one point, as I say my XM had one, and some of the similar aged rovers I have had did as well. Wonder if the guy I sold it to has sorted it out!

Only just noticed this subject. Both my old Series 1s had an aerial in the back window, distinct from the demister and the handbooks definitely mentioned a second aerial in that location.

Only of academic interest now that you've sold yours, Stewart.

My 1990 2.0SEI had two jacks, one from the rear window and one from the aerial. It didn't have the original radio though when i got it so I don't know if both were used at the same time.
