Hi
Was just driving along on this lovely summer day and suddenly a noise and then tick tick tick, speedo at 0. It appeared that the speedo cable must have come off the instrument. I hoped this job would be easy but as I came home I removed the two screws on the sides of the instrument cluster and of course the unit didn't move. I really had no idea how it might come off and the repair manual micro fiche I have didn't give me any other clues either. Well I started take off many things and had so many screws in all sorts of locations until it dawned on me that without knowledge on HOW TO I would never get the thing removed. So great Series 1 guru any idea which are the magic screws or clips or wht do do first? Thanks And now my second post for the bl***y glove box! -------------------- 95 S2 2l Petrol Turbo Exclusive

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum. I'm from Mauritius and after 8 years of patience I've managed to get my 1993 2l inj petrol XM. I hope this helps you. I've done that once. To get to the speedo cable behind the dashboard you have to : 1. remove the two torx screws on each side of the dashboard. 2. (Very tough as hard to explain. You might get it at one go or more) You have to push the dashboard 'cover' upwards till it gets out of the way, without breaking anything. I got it once but the second time I did it, it was tougher than the first time. 3. Once this moves out you have four screws around the display and wires to unplug. 4. You'll see the cable just behind the speedometer display. Hope this helps. Do let me know if it's not clear. Cheers, wassim |

Hi XMotor
Do not forget to release the steering column adjustment lock (and relock after) as moving the column angle and position can let you remove and refit the column top shroud. You may also need to unpug and remove the indicator and wiper switches. Sorry not to be more specific but it is a long time since I took a Mk1 dash to bits. Hi Michael, at the front bottom of the instrument binacle there is a small lip which sits under part of the dash behind the steering wheel. To free this you have to give it a ruddy good, hard shove upwards and forwards with the heels of both hands - Don't worry, nothing will break... When you put it all back together, don't worry about re-seating the lip - just let the binacle sit on top of the dash and fix in place with the two side mounted torx screws, easy to remove next time then when you need to replace a couple of dozen illumination bulbs for example.
Best of luck, Colin.P -------------------- Colin.P.
