My brother has just bought a 1997 exclusive 2.1 turbo diesel and he says he can't find the fuel filter.anyone know where to look? It's not under the bonnet as pictured in the manual.

TIA

Hi Bosscat.

Is it possible it's in the same place, but a different appearance ? They did use more than one pattern of filter. Alternatively, just follow the fuel feed line back from the injection pump until you come to it. If someone happens to have removed it altogether (maybe to try and tackle air ingress etc.) it is most important you reinstate it; much, much cheaper than having to replace the pump.

Mike.

Presumably this is the EPIC pump engine, in whch case the fuel filter is mounted on the engine at the gearbox end of the rocker cover. The top of it is a black plastic dome secured with four screws, undo the screws and remove the top, the filter element is inside.

Thanks for the info guys found the filter under the dome, as it turned out it was as clean as a whistle, same for the air filter, which is a bit annoying because he's looking for a reason for his poor mpg. According to the computer it's doing about 32 mpg average, should he expect better or is that about right for an auto box car?

From what I was told that's about right depending on how you drive and where.

It depends largely on how and where you are driving it. For town driving , that sounds about right but for long distance motorway work at a sensible speed it should do in excess of 40 mpg, but its never going to be as economical as a manual.

Don't agree on the mpg. Unless you are running with the engine "cool" for most of your miles you should be getting around 38 to 40 mpg with an automatic 2.1TD on general run arounds and well over that for long runs. My 12 mile run to work and back was giving me around 38 when I had a 2.1TD Auto XM and now with the V6 I am getting 23.
