Greetings from sunny Ireland. I am new to this. Just bought a 97 2.0i. drove it 140 miles home, after about an hour the water temp gauge was in the red. I opened the filler cap -no steam- got home ok. Gauge must be faulty? would this be common, I am not much of a mechanic but can follow instructions

On the outlet from the cylinder head IIRC. The one for the gauge probably has only one wire to it. If in doubt, come back and query again for more detailed info.

Yes, replace it. Take it to your Dealer and let him decide which one of the options it is; that way he can only blame himself if he gets it wrong, and he will have to take it into stock and you only pay for the correct one. Plug the hole where you take it from. It will not leak any significant amount.
(Or send me a description of the sensor - colour of mounting, number of teminals, colour of connection etc and I'll have a root around in my spares selection) -------------------- Xantia 2 litre HDi Saloon X reg 1999

I've had an interesting time with the temp gauge on my '95 2.5TD. Previously had frequent false temp warning light, with the cooling fans cutting in frequently and erratically (sometimes when gauge showed ~60°C). Now - after a 6 weeks lie-up (waiting for a clutch - not a stock item in Ireland) the gauge appears to show about 20°C LOWER than it used, the warning light and fans never come on. I recently tried leaving the car idling with a thermometer resting at the bottom of expansion bottle and found gauge to agree with thermometer.

Hi wc1965,
The sensor which provides the signal to the temperature gauge is totally seperate from the sensor which provides the cooling fan controller with its information. The attached document explains it all. If you've got any more questions please just ask. cheers noz -------------------- '10 '59' C5 2.0 HDi Exclusive Tourer Metallic Grey
