I think you'll find that the level and drainplugs are concentric with each other. the outer plug has a tube attached which sets the level, so to check the level you remove the inner plug and to drain the gearbox you remove the outer pkug. If you remove any other plug you're likely to get a false reading.

Can't give any more info as my first oil change is coming up in 4000 miles so I'm at the bottom of the learning curve.

Because of the oil/water cooler, the gearbox oil temperature should be the same as the coolant temperature.

I am just telling you what it says in the Citroen Electronic Laser System. I have printed out the pages and will scan them tomorrow and post. The pictures match what is on my car. Perhaps they changed the set up at a later date to match the one in the word doc posted here.

Hi All

I know this section doesn't really apply to my box as I'm sure its not the adaptive type but Ive just taken the time to read this entire thread and now I'm a bit confused (its not hard). I change my auto box fluid every year when i do a service. The oil comes from Citroen (Dexron 2) but the last two changes they have given me multi purpose Fluid?!?!?. I now have 81k on the clock and the last year or so i have been getting jerky gear changes and a reasonable whine in first gear ohmy.gif . Now this is not the end of the world, i have a good auto box in the garage ready to be put to work, but now I'm wondering if changing the fluid type would at least solve my jerky gear change? any ideas? My box is the non adaptive type HP4 18 i think , but will check. I'm positive i had the same box in my old Saab 9000 2.3t, and that had done160k when i bought it and 218k when i sold it, and without any trouble. Not bad considering it was dealing with near 230bhp!
Some of you who have posted on here seem to know a bit about the fluids used so I just thought i would post and see if i have made a mistake as regards fluid selection.

Hi Dean,

I'm a firm believer in sticking to the recommended fluids. Don't know whether your local Cit agent has a good line in more profitable oil, but I think I'd go back to good old Dexron 2. At the worst you'll have done another oil change, which can't do much harm. Bit worried about the residual multi purpose oil that's left in though.

Multi purpose oil. Hypoid? Engine? Manual gearbox? Cutting oil? Penetrating oil? The mind boggles!

Derek

Taking about oils, I have ordered a 20 litre drum of Esso LT and am busy trying to locate a second oil pipe for the gearbox. My hope is I can cut the pipe in half, run the engine/gearbox and essentially the gearbox will pump out the old fluid through one end while I re-fill it down the other end. This is what they do in America until what comes out is running clean and that should entirely replace my 105k old oil.

From my calcs if you just drain and refill then you need to do about 6 changes to replace 90% of the old oil and 12 to replace 99%. Plus the new is constantly being contaminated.

Hi Assich,

Your proposed method sounds good, please let us know how you get on.

My previous post concerning concentric drain plugs was from info on the 4HP20 box that I had downloaded (where else?). Is it possible, do you think, that it applied to the Xantia version?

I seem to have spent the last couple of months under the 2.0 turbo so I havn't seen under the V6 yet. As I wrote, I'm low down on the learning curve.

As far as I can tell the instructions you down loaded are actually for the HP16 Auto Box on Xantia's. I don't know which engine that relates to though.

Thanks Derek

I think i had better do 2 oil changes with D2 in quick succession and get as much of that multi purpose gear oil out as possible!

Hi Dean,

Do you know the identification code for this oil? It might be worth while doing a Google search to find out what you can about it.

Hi Assich,

No, it's the AL4 box, which is the Xantia version of the 4HP20 but with some superficial differences - like the refilling method. The write up on it that I have lists it as "sealed for life" with level checks at 60,000km intervals.

Hi Dean,

I''m sure yours is a 4HP18 box as you suggested. I suppose your "multi purpose" oil
might conform to Dex 2 spec, that's why I suggested a Google search, but the jerky changes and noisy first gear sound suspicious.

Hi Derek

It has whined in 1st for ages its not getting worse though unsure.gif .
I put new o/s engine mounts on the other day and that made the initial drive selection smoother and the gear change slightly less jerky, the other mounts are slightly split and soft, replacement may improve things, but to be honest even if all new mounts do solve jerky changes, its not going to last forever with the whine, Just glad i have the spare box waiting for a transplant biggrin.gif
