Hi, ran one of these until I sold the car in July. Hope the file helps, it really is not a problem but as has been mentioned it is much easier to measure the drained fluid to get the new level just about right.

I presume we all know the correct fluid to add - Esso, not standard atf.

Sorry JohnM, I couldn't open your file. Even the trick of saving it as an html doc , then renaming it as .pdf doesn't work. Acrobat says it's an unsupported file type. Any ideas?

Thank you, JohnM. I hadn't noticed that it was a "Word" document. It opened fine with OpenOffice.

A very useful piece of information, I can also see now how to change the oil.

Regards,

Derek

Im sad to say that the box on my W reg 3.0 24V (66K) has also ceased. Its on its way to BL as I speak. If the autobox is dead it could be a breakers job as I dont have the money to repair it.

Hi mark

Shurley you CANNOT justifying breaking one of the VERY last of these great machines!!

What about sourcing a box from a written off xantia which may have a good box in it, or from a FWD merc of some sort. I'm told the mercs use the same boxes!!!

It cant be worth breaking it!

Oh well Im applying for another credit card as we speak.... Been looking through the cars history, the gearbox appears to have had the oil changed 8 times over the last 4 years. A recon box costs 1760 with fitting - 2500 (half the price of the car)... Happy New Year!

Sorry to hear such bad news, Mark. Hopefully it's not as serious as you suspect.

I honestly think that if you go to a Honda - and I'm a great fan of them - you'll find it a disappointment after your XM although their renowned reliability is a major point in their favour.

With eight oil changes in four years and still failing, I'm back to thinking it's best to follow Citroen's instructions and leave well alone! There has to be a suspicion that oil changes carried out incorrectly have contributed to the failure?

Mark,

How can anyone justify £800 quid labour!! Its beyond me... I guess my figure would be like the £200 mark, BUT I do need to invest in a Hoist first..

No doubt you live many hundred of miles away from N WALES..

Hi Mark

I have a 05 Honda Accord CDTI Tourer. It's ultra reliable but boring, with rock solid suspension (probably due to the 45 section tyres and 18inch rims!) and Honda garages (in the South East) cost a fortune. Just think about how much the depreciation is on a newer car and the paying for the XM gearbox isn't too bad.

Cheers

Tony

Definitely let me know if you are thinking of scrapping it.

Autobox guy near me strenuously advocates leaving the box well alone!! Not sure if it's a cunning ruse to generate future business but he's a real top guy and someone I can talk to. I've had no end of grief with the 4HP14 Xantia 2.0i autoboxes so don't hold hope of lifting one out as a donor from a Xantia even if it is the same gear ratios spec etc.

I recall seeing an ad in Bristol's Trade-it free ad newspaper about a year ago that had a mobile specialist offering a fluid transfusion in your driveway, I guess via the cooler feed being interrupted. IIRC, I seem to recall 60-70 quid mentioned for the job...

Maybe had a few failures after doing a few as he never got picked up on my radar advertising again... wink.gif

How many other equivalent cars would you get just for the repair cost money that would match let alone better the 24v V6 Xm...?

Better the devil you know and all that!!

Andrew

Glad to hear it Mark, as Andrew said you'll never get a comparable car for the money you're going to have to spend. Tony's comment about depreciation is also correct.

Personally, I don't give a rat's tit for the market value of my car - it's its value to me that matters and as I've not yet met ANY car that I would rather have, I'll spend whatever I have to to keep my beauty runnoing. - Or better still, to keep it running.

Derek

Don't they do this flushing service commonly in the US? (Jiffylube or somethinglike that?)
Historically, they have much greater exposure to auto transmissions than we ever have, so there might be something in it.
