I've been making a list (and checking it twice) this morning, of all the things I know are wrong with my XM, or work that needs done. I was surprised at how quickly it's grown, seems I'm going to be busy over the christmas holidays.

I'd be interested in seeing what everyone elses lists are like smile.gif

Lets see, where to start....
  • Mystery intermittent oil leak
  • Occasional notchiness in gear selection when cold
  • Occasional problem selecting reverse
  • Rear sinks soon after engine turn off
  • Drivers side front window totally dead
  • Drivers side rear window broken cable
  • Passenger side window very slow to close
  • Electric mirrors very slow in operation
  • Dipping mirror on reverse not working
  • Reverse lights not working
  • Dot matrix moreless constantly displays 'Right front door open'
  • Drivers door can no longer open and close the central locking with internal lock pin,...yet works by remote wacko.gif
  • Drivers side front and rear doors produce annoying cracking noise from check strap
  • Small ding on bottom of boot lid which has started to rust
  • Boot spoiler cracked
  • Boot lock seized and surround dislocated
  • Steering wheel stereo controls faulty (selects random stations when volume control used)
  • Glovebox lid jams in open position if raised too far
  • Occasional loss of headlights due to usual suspect relay
  • Headlight washers sometimes jam in fully up position after use and dribble, constantly emptying the reservoir
  • STOP and temperature warning lights sometimes glow dimly, even when engine is cold
  • Oil level / pressure gauge not working
  • Rev counter not working
  • Fuel computer gives up reading and blanks after a few minutes driving
  • Dot matrix and clock dim and brighten annoyingly in time with indicators
  • Occasional harshness on back suspension
  • Internal handle surround on drivers back door fallen off
  • Timing belt needs done
  • Ashtray won't stay closed
  • Immobiliser keypad lid busted
  • Headlights don't flash with alarm
  • Alarm LED on dash doesn't work
  • Occasional ABS light (though not much lately) - he says, tempting fate....
  • Something else I've missed I'm sure....
Can anyone top that? biggrin.gif

I fixed the ashtray by using the push switch from my kaput series 1. The push thing has a different more robust design that better locks the ashtray.
I'm looking to change my ashtray into an ipod holder! I've got a wireless transmitter that works pretty well.
Cheers
Steve
My passenger mirror doesn't work at all!

I got a new ashtray button from my local dealer when I got my XM. Fixed the problem and was only a few quid I seem to remember.

Hi Ciaran.

At the risk of being a killjoy, I'd keep a watching brief on Ebay for one with a much shorter list and save yourself a lot of grief. There seem to be a few quite nice ones about at the minute. Your list kind of equates to the scenario of banging the head against the wall, to enjoy the relief when you stop !

Mike.

I pulled the ashtray button out tonight and fiddled around with it, seems its just stiff and has lost its springiness... may try carefully dismantling it and lubricating.

That said, if a new one is only worth a few quid then maybe that's the answer...

I did get it to stay closed eventually, then it sprung open after I got out and closed the drivers door laugh.gif

Hi Ciaran.

Your list kind of equates to the scenario of banging the head against the wall, to enjoy the relief when you stop !

Mike.

I know what you mean.
I have scared myself at just how long the list is written in black and white like that!
I must admit I've been looking at some S1s on Ebay ately, even as just spares cars, but they are getting seriously cheap.
That said, there are good points about the car. I paid just £250 for it, '95 2.1TD VSX. Aside from the missing door handle surround and that bloody ashtray biggrin.gif, the interior is immaculate. I mean the back seats look like they have never been used, as does the carpet throughout. Outside, the bodywork is in very good condition aside from the spoiler crack and ding on the lower boot (wonder if they're related).
The engine was put into it a couple of years ago, and has only done 80k. It's nice when it's not acting up.

A lot of those things are minor issues, and it would be a shame to turf a good car over them, but I do find myself wondering when the hell I'm going to get the time to look at them all!
Timing belt, gear linkage, and oil leak are being sorted on Monday hopefully... maybe if I give up my life for a few weeks I can get the others resolved smile.gif

Looking at it in terms of monetary value, given that it cost 250, it probably wasn't worth it when I put new discs and pads, along with 4 tyres and parking brake cables on it for the MOT.... but I don't like to get the fiscal head on too often when dealing with the XM, since economics dictates that a broken light lens should scrap them by 'normal' standards....
