Yes Sir Rayco,

the Gear selector display does have an illumination bulb of its own, remove instrument panel clocks, then on the rear theres a black encasing this needs removing as it has the gear selector display on it, you'll see the offending bulb there.

I had to do this on my First Auto V6, and my current 1992 SEi auto

If your not sure how to remove clocks simply shout, we'll guide you along

Regards

Hi all.

I'd just add one small point ---- while you've got the pack out, I'd seriously consider changing all the bulbs, or at least those in pretty constant use. For the sake of a very few pounds it's just not worth the hassle of having to get it all out again later. I bet you'll find at least one or two others that are starting to blacken.

Mike.

Has anyone ever tried replacing the dash bulbs with LEDs? They seem to last forever, and come in a vareity of colours.
I know that traditionally the angle of light given off by them wasn't great, but it seems theres newer ones with much greater arcs of visibility.
I've seen a few pictures of dashes lit by these on other car sites, and some of them do look good. Only trouble is I haven't yet found anywhere that sells the LEDs in the little bulb holders.
Anyone I've spoken to thats used them has had to butcher the existing holders and solder an LED into them, as 'apparently' its very hard to buy the holders empty, or indeed they cost more than ones with a bulb in them!

I wouldn't mind replacing mine with white or blue (maybe not, that's a bit VW smile.gif), as a few of them have gone now.

So can one still buy these lamps or do they have to be ordered? thats the normal ones not the l.e.d.
How long on average does it take to remove dash clock and replace.
Cheers

Hi Rayco,

It takes about half an hour depending on how many screws have been left out from the last time it was done !!

Seriously, look in the self help section for a step by step guide to dismantling enough of the dash to get at the bulbs. The guide says you need to remove the steering wheel but by lowering to its lowest position the two screws hidden behind it can just about be reached with a slim screwdriver without removing the steering wheel.

cheers

Hi. Rayco.

The bulbs are individually replaceable, readily available aftermarket and any decent motor factor should be able to supply.

Mike.
