Hi,
This is just a quick question asking what are all the various warnings and info the displays on the sides of the steering wheel can display? What are the common and less common ones? Do S2 cars have more or different messages? I think the right side display is the trip computer, what can this show? thanks deian This post has been edited by deian on January 15, 2007 11:08 pm |

I noticed last night as I changed into reverse a new message appeared (but couldn't read it So does it also tell you you're in reverse or the reverse lights are on? -------------------- Dave.

To achieve sensible results from the RH display, it is necessary to hold the button depressed for a few seconds to allow the computer to reset itself. This applies to the mpg (both), Average speed, speed since starting plus mpg since starting, etc.
Otherwise you will find your average speed shows something silly like 30 mph (avarage of starting speed and top speed). And as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator the instant mpg will read 99.9 whatever speed you are doing. Have fun! -------------------- Xantia 2 litre HDi Saloon X reg 1999

DO more important messages take priority over less , like oil pressure over abs warning, or do they rotate. Mine has abs warning on constantly, be nice to think that hydraulic or oil warnings would over ride it?

Noz!
SERIES ONE Car DO NOT display Radio station information.. OR Are you listing ALL messages ever used in S1 and S2 cars?? ALSO Bonnet open, you missed that one ALSO Brake light check, and informing appropiate light out ALSO DEFECTIVE RH BRAKELIGHT or SIDELIGHT ALSO DEFECTIVE LH BRAKELIGHT or SIDELIGHT That being either a side light or brake light in seperate massages depending which has blown S1 Cars only for brake lights 94XM The dreaded ABS warning TAKES OVER ALL other messages, with is a right pain! You'll need to fix the ABS fault to eliminate it unfortunally! Simply removing the ABS lamp in speedo clocks will do NO good I had ABS on for ages, untill I fitted a rear passenger sensor and it cleared, then the message sentre worked properly and stayed out after the brake test. Dien, In short, S1 cars do more checks, but unfortunally DO NOT have the radio info repeated on it, which would have been a super addition.. Shame Hope that helps regards citroenxm -------------------- 1993 K Reg 3.0 V6 12 Valve Auto (Green) LPG S1.5 SORNd

but doesn't that reset your 'average mpg' over time? the value of MPG will be more accurate since 'average mpg' is a reading of the 'mpg over time', so the longer the time, the more accurate the MPG will be.... while i understand your reason to reset the computer to get an average speed, does this ALSO reset the 'average mpg', if this is the case, then i would reset the computer when you refill at a petrol station, or even longer from when you start owning the car |

no matter about the radio info, cool idea, but if the radio is taken out and replaced with an aftermarket one then that function is gone, so it's not much of a bother for me, besides once the radio is on, i know what i'm listeing to, the steering wheel controls are cool on the xantia, the xm is a bit like the starship enterprise isn't it... which is quite cool really!! |

Deian,
You're correct. Pressing the reset button on the right hand stalk resets all the computer functions. I have always done as you suggest and reset on fillup (brim to brim). In the same way, I reset the trip mileometer at the same time. The information is then fed into a spreadsheet on my PD (which also doubles as my satnav) where it keeps a running log of fuel consumption. I now have all the figures for the past three years. For journey-to-journey average speeds it's relatively easy to divide miles done by time taken. Regards, Derek -------------------- 1999 3.0V624v Exclusive Black! (RP8362)

Hi citroenxm,
When I first posted a reply I thought Deian was asking about S2 but on re-reading his post I agree its ambiguous. No model in his signature so I didn't know. I knew about some differences between S1 and S2 including the lack of radio repeat info on S1. On both my S2's I don't get the following: Need to press the brake pedal on first start Bonnet Open Rear left brake light defective Rear right brake light defective Deian, Whilst it seems logical to refrain from resetting the mpg computer for more accurate results it doesn't work like that in practice. I don't know how big the memory is but lets say that it takes a sample every second. For every hours worth of data that represents 3600 samples. Over the course of a single tank of fuel that can represent 10's of thousands of bits of data. When the buffer is so large the average becomes useless. The stored average value ceases to move after a while. As an analogy think about the average temperature of the world over a year. From summer to winter, from equator to pole. That number would be absolutely meaningless. But its still an average. Obviously to make it more useful you would break it down to, say, average summer temp, average winter temp, average at poles, average at equator. The smaller sample makes the number more meaningful. Another example would be if I left the average running and then hitched the caravan on. For the first 10 hours of towing the average display would remain about the same whilst the instantaneous value would drop by 15 mpg. As Derek says I trip my odometer and average mpg display every time I fill the tank. If I leave it longer than that the average becomes stationary and meaningless. I would gladly give up the repeat radio information for information about the engine from the ecu. Telling me that I'm permanently tuned to radio 2 has no useful function. cheers noz -------------------- '10 '59' C5 2.0 HDi Exclusive Tourer Metallic Grey

There seem to be some variations even in the Mk2s. My last one, reg Jan 96, the same as my present one, (and the same reg letters), had a radio display panel in the rev counter, although it didn't work, and I seem to remember also on the matrix, although you couldnt make much sense of it as it always spoke in French or German, wherever you put the fuses! but the one I have now does'nt have either. I dont have the luxury of a right hand display as mine has one of those old fashioned mechanical injection engines.

Hi, i would assume the software in the trip computer is programmed to fill certain addresses of the memory with fuel consumption data, but when this memory is full, it will go back to the begining and over write space 1 with the latest data, doing it this way will make sure you get an average over a certain amount of time that is continuous, i.e last 30 days, rather than 30 days only and then nothing more, but i understand your point in that it won't keep on recording data due to memory limitations, the way derek does it gives a longer term picture, as for wanting more info from the ecu than the radio, have you looked at megasquirt, with a bit of homework, some maths, technical background a few months of work and lots of patience you could run the engine off your own laptop and log EVERY single thing going on inside, for anyone who thinks this is a big no no, you can get maps based on the original ecu map so there is no reason for it to damage your engine, of course you can go on and edit the maps and do all sorts to the input, it also runs in real time. the XM would TRULY be the starship enterprise then!! |

Warning: Brake pressure loss! Engine temp too hot - slow down Hydraulic pressure (What about it?!) Those are a few I saw mine display when I tried to start it with an extremely low battery one day. The rev counter (which doesn't work) and speedo also did an amusing dance too.... -------------------- '95 XM 2.1TD VSX Hatch: RP 6429. Rare green ;-)

Another one for you. According to my handbook, first message "WORN OUT BRAKE PADS", second message "BRAKE MAINTENANCE". Of course I can't vouch for these as I never let my pads get to that level.
On the subject of the average fuel display, maybe the computer just keeps a running total of miles done since last reset and fuel used ditto, then divides one by the other? that would only require two incrementing memory addresses and one results address.
