My XM is currently enjoying bed & breakfast at my local garage (he describes himself as a Citroen specialist!). The problem is both the red & green light are on permanently oh the key pad. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so what's the solution?

This is a classic result of a poor connections within the system. Highest probability is in or beneath the fuseboxes and connections in the area in front of the battery box. Corrosion can occur not only in the connections underneath the boxes but within the boxes, notably where the fuses are located in the boxes. They should all be removed and checked fo signs of scorching. The boxes should be checked underneath for corroded connections. Make sure the battery does not get discharged badly during the checks. Keep it well charged and its cable connections tight and secure.
You are more likely to receive more answers if you put your questions in the appropriate part of the site; i.e.>Cars > Electrical for instance, and identify what vehicle is under discussion. There are so many variations.

It's a 2.1 TD 96, the fuse box wiring looks ok. New relays have been tried and failed to rectify problem. A key pad from a peugeot 406 was tried, it turned out the green light, but when the number was put in it was back to both lights. What else can we try?

Have you tried bridging the connections to the tilt-switch (if it's fitted)? This is the
unit in the engine bay in front of the driver. It has what looks like a rubber press-button on the top which has to be pressed to restore the system to normal if your vehicle is overturned. Another member had to replace it in the end, as it is a sealed unit. He had never turned his vehicle upside down either!

Hi. Ceafcmm.

Are you in the Midlands by any chance ? If so you're welcome to pop by and bring your ECU and keypad and try it on mine. (I'm presuming here that yours is the Lucas EP1C system ?) I know that mine is OK, so if we were to substitute your ECU and key pad(s), it would establish if the fault is related to some other area on yours, or if the ECU has thrown a wobbly.

Mike.
