Hi all

If i wanted to do a hid conversion on my triple lamp conversion, thats six H1 bulbs to be replaced! would i have to squeeze 3 ballasts in under the bonnet? if so that could be a little too many and i would only do the main beams.
Also do the Hid's go in any lamp unit, i.e a standard size H1 style bulb?

Hi Dean

The HID bulbs come with the same fitting bases as the halogens. So if you currently use H1's you ask for H1 type HID bulbs. The bad news is that it is one ballast for each bulb so if you did all yours thats 6 ballasts to go under the bonnet. The original HID kits had 35 Watt bulbs/ballasts. Recently they have added two further types, a super slim ballast (half the thickness of the early type) and an uprated 50 Watt bulb/ballast set (same size ballast as the original ones). Needless to say both of these options are not so easy to find and are more expensive. The value of HID mainbeams is borderline (see DerekW's postings) and one of your options would be just to fit one of the dip beams each side. That would make the outer Halogen dips look like sidelights. Do not forget that on a standard XM the dip bulbs stay on when you use the mainbeams so you get the benifit of the HID's higher output for the near distance and verge all the time.

John

Thanks John, i didnt realise it was one ballast per bulb ohmy.gif ...things could get a little tight with 6 under the bonnet! so i think sticking to the original mains is sensible and maybe going for the dipped beam conversion like you say.

Hi Dean

If you are over my way I can show you a fitted car and a boxed set. The cable lengths in the kits are fixed and you are stuck with what you get because of the high operating voltage. The cable length has varied a bit between sets but this could limit the ballast placing options.

I'm a bit surprised. I thought Morettes were high performance lights anyway?

only just seen this thread, i have morettes with hid, work a treat, you never need high beam again............

you only need 2 hid bulbs not 6, that would be overkill.

also with 6000k bulbs, diamond white etc, the normal h1's left in high beam look a little orange/yellow, so go for 4300 / 4700 etc

Hi Lez

Holy thread resurection?? no, holy forum resurrection very much a big yes!!!!
To answer your question no i didnt go for it in the end but it may still be on the cards at a later date, its just i dont think its as much needed in the moretts as it is in the standard lamp units.

Possibly the last post on this forum............................
