Hi all

Please can you help i have a 2.1 td on a j 91 it has covered 96000 on the clock i have just had a new valeo clutch fitted by a citroen service centre (not main dealer) but i have a whinning coming from the primary gearbox bearing ( the car sounds electric). The guys have said the the problem will not get any worse and if i can live with the noise to leave it alone as i only do 7000 miles a year and will only be keeping it for another 12/18 month max.

They also said it had done more like 196000 miles not 96000 as this bearing should not have gone at the clock mileage.

has anyone had the same problem and is it ok to leave alone and carry on driving.

many thanks for your help on the mater

Regards

I can but agree with the garage diagnosis. Those boxes are not prone to that sort of failure, to my knowledge.

My previous XM had done 292k when I sold it and the gearbox was still good, I suppose they did fill it up with oil?

1/ Are you sure it is a bearing in the gearbox and not the right drive shaft intermediate bearing? That's a fun one to replace.

2/ In Australia we use Nulon manual gearbox additive along with the correct grade oil for the gearbox. My XM is auto, but my D Special is manual and the difference using Nulon is fantastic - quieter running, much easier changes (probably because the synchros are better lubed) and allegedly 20 more horse power at the rear wheels wink.gif

(one of the statements above in 2/ is not correct - can you guess which one? cool.gif )
