Just a quick point. I've not had occasion to replace the rear arm bearings on any of my previous XMs (but have done on BXs and AX). Having read the various comments I was all prepared for an arm full of corrosion, water etc. etc.
I was suitably surprised therefore to find it bone dry, completely corrosion free and still with its original complement of grease. Might I suggest, that on my XM, at least, the problem is not with the ingress of wet, but simply that the bearings are at best undersized for the job and not really the best way of doing it at all ! P.S. Arms off and stripped. Looks like the fabled drain hole I've read about isn't drilled through on mine. Repair kits appear grease and oil tight, so bearings well greased and rest of arm filled with oil. Fingers crossed !! Like you, I have replaced them on BXs and CXs but have never had them go on an XM. When reassembling I have allways filled the void between the two bearings with grease and have not had a repeat problem even on my last CX which had covered 262k when I sold it, of which I had done about 160k. I did have to replace the radiator three times though!
