Hi All

Slowly clearing the faults on the green V6 auto.
I have noticed a squealing noise from the rear passenger side wheel on very sharp left hand bends. Nothing was noticed on the recent MOT. It does not happen turning the other way with this car or at all with the estate on the same bends.

Regards

Funny you should say that. I am noticing the same, but from the front passenger side wheel and on bends in both directions.

It started happening on bends/roundabouts that I never had squeeling on before when doing the same and higher speeds.

Now, the things I have considered as causes so far are:

It has the old spare tyre on it. It is a Mitchelin (as are 2 of the others, with one Perelli or something) but it is much older (not quite original from what I remember of the date on it) and so a different tread pattern to the current range and much older rubber. It was unused when put on though. Tread depth is a fairly close match to the other side.

I had the tracking checked, and they adjusted it and said it is now correct, but I am not certain. Waiting to see if there is any uneven ware to suggest it is still not right.

The car had a prang before around that wheel that gave the wheel a bit thump (bending the alloy that was on there), so I wonder if some alignment other than tracking is out. Though the garage that did the repairs said that it was only cosmetic damage.

Type pressures - I have checked them but I never entirely trust the machines on garage forecourts.

Cheers,
Rowan.

Hi Rowan

Funny you should mention tyre pressures as I checked today. It has Mich all round, all were a bit down except the drivers side front that was well down, nearly half flat. No squealing on the trip home. Must try to remember that Alloys do not always hold air as well as steel wheels.

Squeeling was the only way I noticed a half flat tyre on the XM once.

Was somewhat paranoid about tyre preasures after rolling a three wheeler due to a slow puncture - but the XM copes so well I have become a bit more lax in checking them. Must do them today before going on holiday though.

Hi All

Used the V6 for a few days now. Been throwing it round corners much faster than I usually do. No squeal at all now the tyre pressures are right.
