Bought a secondhand 2.1 engine complete with fuel pump and turbo off a mate (not any longer) and fitted it to my car which has laid dormant for a couple of years. I took his word that it was OK and never bothered to check it before fitting.
It starts ok but is very (very) smoky (whitish/blue) and runs very lumpy and will not rev past 2000rpm. and dies after about a minute. Starts up straight away but dies again soon after.

I drained and replaced all the old diesel.
Checked the belt timing.
Replaced the injectors with the ones on my running car which I know to be good.
The sump is filled with very thin flushing oil at present.

I'm going to check the compression this weekend, but does anyone else have any suggestions please?

Cheers

Jim.

Hi Jim

If the engine starts OK I wouldn't think that there is anything wrong with the compression, it sounds more like air in the fuel. Have you replaced the fuel filter? if its clogged it will cause air to be sucked in. Its failure to rev would also indicate problems in the fuel department. Put a section of clear plastic tube in the feed to the pump and watch for bubbles. If your engine has a fuel heater they also are a prime suspect for letting air in.

The white smoke you refer to could be partially burnt fuel due to injection problems, air again, or it could well be the flushing oil you have in the engine being burnt. So, if you havn't done so investigate these first.
