I have gone through the wiring and finally got around to replacing the mirror housing after knocking it off and cracking it with a joist I was supposed to putting on the roof rack
One of the mysteries for me is getting the mirror set up. It does work or tries to, it moves a bit when reverse is selected and moves through all the planes if set via the internal switch. My handbook does not mention how to set it, does anyone else know how to set it up? Cheers all, Robin. -------------------- XM ownership - He took a bite and kept chewing!

Hi Robin
With the ignition on select the passenger mirror with the switch then adjust it for the rear view you want. Select reverse hold the clutch in and reset the mirror to view the curb for reversing. If all is well the mirror will now dip to the set position on selecting reverse and return when a forward gear is engaged. Regards XMexc -------------------- An interest in 2.5TD's.

Thanks XMexc, just tried that and the result is a much improved set of movements. It does not dip as far as the setting for reverse but goes about half way and then comes almost back to the original rearview setting.
I will give it a while to get used to working and see how it goes. I did not try it with the engine running so it may improve with full voltage available. Cheers, Robin. -------------------- XM ownership - He took a bite and kept chewing!

after repairing the heating element on mine it has tended to spasm, never quite finding the right position regardless of how many times i adjeust the setting in the car. it is as if it goes past its limit when trying to dip for reverse, then when coming up again it is confused.
when pushing the mirror manually from outside, such as when replacing the glass unit, it can move the motors. i'm wondering whether this pushed the motors or sensors past where they should be. it used to work just fine but now, as i say it seems to hunt up and down several times before eventually timing out and resting in the wrong place. i notice when the glass is removed it works perfectly so are there any known set points, or limits when manually re-installing the glass? -------------------- 2.5td Exclusive - Emerald green of course

Hi Robin
They can be a bit tempermental bit I have found that they tend to get better with regular usage. Regards XMexc -------------------- An interest in 2.5TD's.

Well, thank you!! I thought the mirror was preset to go fully down and be pretty useless apart from seeing kerb that's nowhere near the rear wheel. Now I can have a play tomorrow and reset it - I never knew this was possible until now I'm presuming with my auto I just leave it in 'R' to adjust? Hi Wirdy
Yes. Best of luck with setting it up. Hi Gav The mirror glass can sometimes foul the mirror surround. Not sure why as taking it out and reinserting it cured mine and I was sure I did not do anything different. The positioners are 3 white plastic rods, thread down one side and ball joint on the mirror end. These can get damaged and prevent full movement if they have been forced. Hi All The very late XM's were fitted with a similar system that shunts the drivers seat between 2 preset positions. I can imaging some real problems if it has the same relability as the dipping mirror. I am waiting for the ebay add. Late XM for sale cheap, comes complete with Chauffer pinned to steering wheel by defective electric drivers seat. Hi
That's interesting. I've never found the two seat preset and I have a '00 Exclusive which should fit the bill for having it. Perhaps given that it sounds like another problematic feature I'm better off without it! Cheers Tony |

If your other half is inclined to drive the car you also need to educate them to not adjust the RVM for "normal" use while they are about to reverse out of the driveway. This leads to you later thinking that the reverse setting is kaput because the variation between your other half's normal use and yours may be insignificant.
You then have to reset your preferred RVM reverse position. -------------------- Craig Keller

When the mirror glass is removed, there is a white plastic cross-bar visible. One end of this can sometimes come out of its location so the motor works but the mirror plays silly beggars. Only cure seems to be to take the motor assembly out (three screws) and relocate it (it needs a knack!) a drip of oil may make it work easier. When replacing the glass, don't press it in too hard. If the wire is located correctly on the back of the glass, the very lightest touch will locate it firmly. -------------------- Xantia 2 litre HDi Saloon X reg 1999
