For months now I've been putting up with a terrible 'cracking' sound everytime the front passenger door was open and shut. Today I got round to determining what it was and fixing it.

Near the door hinges there is a metal check strap that prevents the door hitting the bodywork when fully open. With the plastic door pannel removed (you do not have to do this to fix problem) I could determine that the check strap mechanism was bolted to the door and was moving around when the door was moved. Two 10mm bolts hold this to the door and simply tightening them cured the problem. Access to these bolts is straight forward once a piece of protective foam is moved out of the way.

Yes, I've read in many forums that just tightening the two bolts resolves the problem (on other Citroen models as well), however not in all cases. My XM's rear door was doing the same so I took off the whole mechanism (as I had the door trim off to fix an electric window), cleaned it well and put back lots of oil and grease but it's simply a case of the two rollers that drive the hinge being worn out. It has improved now but not totally cured. I think this whole assembly comes as a part from Citroen.

regards
George

On my 2.1, the part of the door-stay that attaches to B-pillar has cracked, same awful noise! Guess I'll have to source a replacement when it returns from XM centre...

I have seen this on a few XM's over the years, don't know if it's carelessness or bad design...

Just bad design + normal wear, the part in the door you can't see is getting wet and dusty from any water dropping in the door -and it does drops, I've seen it live with the trim off and a little rain-. On the door I did I've now dressed the inner part with a common plastic bag to fit it, and folded it under the base that screws on the door (the two bolts behind the foam thing). Filled up with grease, it'll now operate at its best...(I also trimmed open the hole on the foam so it doens't "clean" all the grease on the lever).

Guess what, I first tried to use condoms to cover it but they just couldn't stand the streching...
