Ok my son went to move the xm and did not know I had changed the code from my usual pin to 1111....(as I left it at the mot station)
I forgot to Change it back to my usual code so he had three attempts and stuffed it.. Now when I enter 1111 the green light comes on but the red one does not go out and I can't start it. . So. . Don't know what to do! Its a 2.5 diesel. -------------------- |

If I turn ignition on I get the red light.
Enter any code and the buttons beep etc After 4th digit and a pause the green light comes on but red does not go off. Keypad now unresponsive (which is as far as I can remember normal) Car won't start. Turn ignition off.. Key pad green led flashes and a beep every second for 20 seconds or so This is same for the correct or random code -------------------- |

I've not had this, but I'd be inclined to try disconnecting battery, reconnecting then trying 1111, 0000 and your normal code to see if any of these will work. There may be a time delay after 3 attempts before you can successfully try again. However, this is JUST A GUESS, so if anyone knows better, then try their method. I think there might be a 'maintenance' type code as well, but don't know what it is.

I did this at the petrol station forgot the code from what i remember the keypad bleeps constantly, turn the key to the "A"position and leave for thirty mins after that the bleeping stops then you can restart the engine as normal.
Regards, Norman Just had a read of the owners handbook and it says turn off the ignition and leave for thirty mins then put the right code in after the bleeping stops. sorry for the wrong info. Hi Les
The routines that have locked you out are coded in the ECU. I think the lock out information is stored in static memory along with the start code. The static memory does not reset with a battery disconnection. There may be a timed reset but I seem to remember that time varies with age of 2.5. Disconnecting the battery on a 2.5 restarts the timeout from zero. Every time you turn the ignition or punch the keypad timeout restarts from zero. Most 2.5's time out after 30 miins, late ones an hour and a few early ones 1 min. There is one other little trap with 2.5 ECU's if you disconnect the battery. The ECU contains two separate microprocessors that are supposed to start up in order. Occasionally when reconnected they start up in the wrong order. This gives a green light and no code is needed to start the car. In this state as soon as you switch off the ECU behaves normally. If it is in locked out state you then get the red and green again. If you get really stuck I can replace/rest the ecu to factory settings. Will need to know the type codes on your ECU. Hi John, does the 2.5 not follow the 2.1 immobiliser protocols ? Lock with plip then unlock with plip to restart ecu regimes and free immobiliser.

Hi Robert
A very few 2.5's made in 1996 had the plip immo release code added to the ECU. The immo setup got changed a number of times during that period. There were easier to use changes and also security ones. I believe there was mounting pressure from Insurance companies over losses. There had been a significant increase in theft of near new top of the range cars. Plip signal recording and copying allowed this with many makes and models. The Mk 2 XM plip signal is effectively unique for each key press so not a theft problem. Despite this there was a rush to close the stable door and keep the Insurers onside. Or perhaps stop them suing for free replacements. The upshot was on new models RF plips were relegated to door release and locking. The immo RF link became a hidden 4 digit code sent from key case a few mm to a coil around the ignition lock. That got rid of the need for a keypad and code entry. The injection pump got theft proof armouring added as standard. I guess that Citroen had to show that they had secured the high value XM's. So they got Bosch to remove the plip keypad bypass signal from the V6's and 2.5's.
