can cynlider head be taken off without taking the engine out off the car

ohnny,
can't say for certain about the 2.1 but certainly the 2.5 head comes off wi the engine in the car. There's a couple of bolts which very useful to know about which takes the time to remove the first time (about 4 hours) to 1 hour thereafter. Why are you taking the head off? There are three obvious posibilites for these symptoms which spring to mind:
Head gasket completely shot Rings completely shot Timing belt has skipped some teeth Of the three int terms of statistical probabbility, the timing belt gets my vote. This doesn't rule out the others of course but it would give those symptoms and in relative terms is the easiest to check. Where in the country are you? Let me know how you get on.
