As I'm sure you are aware Peter, I loathe diesels, in any form, in too many ways to bother listing again.
That aside, you are of course talking about an XM. However, I do prefer something where everything works most of the time and life isn't a dreary round of paying large sums of cash to 'experts' who can't actually fix the damn thing. Even £700 20,000 mile clutches pale into insignificance compared to my old XM's running costs! -------------------- Chris Light

Hi Chris
I know its been a long time but I have only just noticed this post Your experience with XMs has not been mine, I have been running them for 13 or 14 years now and compared to modern cars have found them very reliable. My green estate which my wife wrote off last year covered about 70,000 miles virtually trouble free, I did have to fit a head gasket when I first bought it but have had no major problems since, and such is the mechanical durability that they will keep going for 300,000 miles or more, my experience has only been with the 2.1 manual diesel so can't speak for the others. Several people I know have had very expensive problems with new cars that have done considerably less mileage than that. I do repair them myself which admittedly makes running them a lot cheaper, but at least I can repair them, I can't the new ones. Peter -------------------- Used to have:
