Well i spent all day Saturday trying to work out how to get to the Gaitors...Nightmare.

Is it possible to replace the Gaitor bellows on both sides with the rack still in on the car ?

Can someone please post a step by step guide to help me out as i'm now on the bus to work ... sad.gif

Cheers for now.....Paul

Im not sure if its possible on the car, ive never had the need to try but there is a guide to removing a steering rack here with pics, doesnt focus on anything other than getting the rack out. http://www.club-xm.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15
There should be someone about here who would know if its possible without removing the whole rack although it doesnt take long to get it out and would save a whole lot of hassle.

Well after days and days stripping the car's running gear down i have finally got to taking the rack off..The last part of the job is to un screw to the 2 Union nuts on the rack (the ones that feed LHM to it) I cant stop green blood fron ouzing from the pipes.

I have followed the Haynes depressurizing proceedure but still it comes wacko.gif

Any Citroen friends help with this one ?

Thanks

If you've depressurised everything then it can only be gravity thats syphoning the fluid from the reservoir. Either put a bucket under the pipes once disconnected or push a stopper into the hole on the end of the pipe. Try something like a matchstick wrapped in insulating tape or some such thing. It won't need to be able to hold much pressure.

cheers

Hi Bantam, after depressurising, turn the steering full lock to full lock to displace fluid in the steering actuator(ram). The syphon effect due to gravity (the reservoir being the system high point)will continue to draw fluid from the reservoir via the pinion valve as this rarely attains an hydraulic neutral position. So remove the suction line from the reservoir(or pump) and the flow will diminish and eventually cease. When re-pressurising i attach a tyre pump to the reservoir vent line and pressurise to a couple of psi.Once the engine is started continue to apply the air pressure to the reservoir until the vehicle rises.Air does leak around the filter head seal but you can easily keep the pressure up. This ensures positive lhm feed to the pump. You can then bleed as normal.

Hi Bantam

The rack has to come out the drivers side, have you removed the exhaust or the power steering ram? one will need to come off for it to clear the downpipe, you will also need to remove the o/s handbrake cable and bend its guide a bit to get enouhgh clearance for the pinion to come out if its still got the pipes on it.

Rack will come out with the ram on, deffo on a 2.1. it fouls on the footbrake cable guide, use of large hammer is what some ppl dont like to do, i'm a man who likes use of large hammers, its called therapy.

First time id it i think it took about 6 hours from getting the rack unbolted to getting it out the side anf and waving it in the air shouting i've won you b*****d

now i can get them out in minutes.

will be doing mine again just as soon as it fails the mot, because the free play its got in it is ''worrying'' to some. I'm fine with it, 3/4 of an inch at the steering wheel is about 1-1.5mm in the rack, IE the preload has failed, but theres not enough space in there for it to disengage from the pinion

Hi Bantam,

I'm not sure what you were trying to link to bu tthe link just takes you to the post page. You need to edit the link to send it where you first intended.

Cheers
