Hi Guys,

I just read a thread where someone said there 2.1 is still going strong at 280,000miles..... What sort of milage will these engines do before needing a rebuild ?

My last one N497 YBL had covered 292,000 miles when I sold it and was still going strong. A little smokey on start up but then fine, used very little oil and pulled like a train still. I believe that it had a head gasket replacement before I bought it but otherwise was original maybe even the clutch as it was failing when I sold it, although it only slipped if you pushed it hard.

I bought an L reg, 2.1td auto, it had 262000 miles on it, and DIDN'T smoke on startup! (Autobox had been rebuilt at 170k)

Broke mine last year after the G box failed.

Odometer broke years before and I guessed at around 250K plus

When breaking I found that someone had already been playing the clock.......

So probably over 300K

Slightly OT, but the XUD is known to be good for at least 250K or more, providing there's no overheating and head gasket damage.

My Pug. 405 with the XUD9 went to 251K, the last 40 with a blowing head gasket, but no water loss...

I often wonder, however, if they are a bit overstretched in the XUD11 form.

Hi r

On the contrary. The 2.1 has a completely redesigned head so as to be airlock free and give excellent circulation, the thermostat being in the radiator return. When the header tank is full so is the head. I have never heard of a 2.1 head cracking, in fact I boiled one once and got away with it!

I consider the 2.1 to be the best IDI engine everproduced, not only is it long lived but it is more fuel efficient, largely due to the tremendous torque it develops below turbo boost speed. My wifes 1.9 ZX does a best of about 45 mpg, the 2.1 XM will do over 50

Hi Ciaran
The A6

Well there was the cam belt plus tensioners, plus AC belts and tensioners, plus pulley with sheared bolts.
Two new tyres
Fuel pump lift pump, main injector pump
Oh and CV joint and wheel bearing on its way out

So covered about 20k miles, very expensive miles and its going up for sale.

Bloody german pile of XXXX

So for the last 4 weeks Iv been driving the other halfs Suzuki SC 100 / Whizzkid 1982 rear engined Jap mini car. Very very good fun, cut my fuel bill from £180 to £80 a month. Somehow ended up buying another one off Fleabay.

Think, go cart, 3-4 " ground clearance, lightweight so its 47bhp does it well. You can park it at right angles to the kerb. and it goes like shit off a shovel. But it relies mainly on the tyres for its suspension so big change from
cits

So not sure now, would love another XM but as money is squeaky tight at the mo, it will either be the Whizz for a fair while or even a smart urgh. Then again Im only 7 miles from wolsey house motors

Hope you Ok

Ouch Mark....

I did once consider an A6 if I ever couldn't find another good XM, but from what I've heard off yourself and others, I think I'll give them a miss.

Sure we may curse our XMs at times but when it comes down to it they're a hell of a lot more versatile and actually repairable by their owner some of the time...

The whizz sounds like fun, dunno if I'd fancy doing the daily commute in it though.

Come on back when things get financially better, there are more good XMs out there than you'd think, they seem to be popping up all over the place again lately....

Hi Ciaran

I considered practically everything, including the A6, BMW 5 series, Merc E Class and I have come to the conclusion that there is no modern car that is a match for the XM. The ammount of money it is likely to cost maintaining a modern car makes the XM look a bargain whatever goes wrong with it. So unless they become completely unrepairable I shall continue to run them, probably as long as I can drive - that's why I am stockpiling them now. biggrin.gif

Amen to that!

Likewise, I will run my XM estate for as long as I can, as nothing really matches it for high-speed, long-haul freighting.

1997 seems just about the latest point in automotive evolution that things were actually generally repairable. No ECU to control the horn, as yet, or "sorry, mate - you'll need a new unit - £750.00". Some of the horror stories from the Honest John forum scare me.

Somewhere in Berkshire is a BX with an XUD that has exceeded 500K...

It was 'Honest John's' forum that put the last nail in the coffin of any possibility of owning a post 2000 car. Many of the Peugeot/Citroen cars up until then were only 'slightly' electronic and still servicable, but common rail, dual mass flywheels and having to have the fault codes read because your horn doesn't work - no thank you. All my life I have generally understood cars - until now. sad.gif ohmy.gif wacko.gif

I'd love to see an Audi engine still going as strong at 3/400k.... don't see many of them. I'm not sure if its because they die before this, or their owners want someone newer / can't be bothered with the insane repair costs for some components.

Hi
My 2.1TD hatch has 228,000 and still going strong. Had the head gasket done @165,000, new clutch around 170,000. I think it is only the second clutch. Hydraulics are a bit slow when starting up, but a good workhorse.
I sold it to my son in law then bought it back off him when he said he was selling it. Don't think he liked the XM too much, he's a Vauxhall man!
